COAL/OIL SLURRY PIPELINING PROCESS IN TESTS

Unocal Corporation's Brea, California, laboratory is working on a coal/oil slurry pipelining process that could sharply reduce coal shipping costs. Research begun in March 1987 has yielded a method, through use of additives, for suspension of coal in light oil. To remain suspended, coal must be ground into the flour like consistency utilities burn in boilers. Work has turned to a separation process expected to involve a mechanical process such as centrifuging, to be followed by a secondary proprietary step to recover about 98% of the oil. The oil would continue through pipelines to refineries.
