RAISE-AND-LOWER LIGHTING COLUMNS WILL CUT MAINTENANCE COSTS IN HALF
The Abacus system was chosen to replace the existing central reservation lighting on Belfast's M2 motorway. The Abacus system involves the raising and lowering of the entire mast by means of an electrically operated mobile hydraulic ram, greatly simplifying operations such as relamping, cleaning and general maintenance. The existing lamps were also switched to six high pressure sodium lamps per column. These provide average values of 50 lux in the offside lane and 21 lux at the edge of the hard shoulder. Scrapping of the existing system and replacing with the Abacus system was more expensive than refurbishment, but with savings on maintenance, the extra cost was estimated to be paid back in six to eight years.
