BALTIMORE METRO'S SIGNAL INNOVATIONS

The three diversions from previously applied technology are detailed in this edited version of a paper presented at the June rapid transit conference of the American Public Transit Association by Howard W. Gregson, Kaiser Engineers chief systems engineer. The three diversions make use of the following: an off-the-shelf processor, an IBM PC/XT personal computer, to perform automatic train dispatching functions at the terminal stations, a wide-to-gauge derail layout to protect trains from overrunning the outlet signal from a storage track at the Owings Mills terminal station and dual microprocessors in a redundant configuration to implement the nonvital signal logic.
