THE DE-COMPLEXING OF JAMAICA

All rail service between New York and Long Island must operate through Jamaica. To alleviate the constant congestion created by this, a $300 million rebuilding of the station is planned. The plan calls for partial flyovers with reconfigured platforms. The overall objective is implementation of an improved track layout including: 1) a high-speed bypass route for non-stop express trains and turnout modifications to minimize speed restrictions; 2) station platform changes to reduce congestion within and surrounding the station; 3) track changes necessary to access the new Hillside/Holban Yard; and 4) a centralized master tower to consolidate control of Jay, Hall, and Dunton interlockings. The increased flexibility in assigning station tracks for both express and local trains will allow a reduction in and equalization of station track percent occupancies and reduce the number of instances where one train must be scheduled to closely follow another train on the same station track as well as peak period running times.
