THE CRACKING OF BITUMINOUS SURFACINGS ON SEMI-RIGID ROADBASES IN CHINA

This paper discusses the cracking of bituminous surfacings constructed over semi-rigid roadbases in China. The results of rebound deflection testing of pavements with bituminous surfacings and semi-rigid roadbases are reported, as well as the results of visual surveys of cracking of bituminous pavements constructed over both semi-rigid and flexible roadbases. Following this, the mechanisms of cracking of these types of pavement are discussed. The results of another set of cracking surveys of bituminous pavements with semi-rigid roadbases are then reported, including an investigation of cores taken from cracked areas of pavement. A comparison is made between the cores and the cracking mechanism, and good agreement is observed. Finally, measures for minimising non-traffic-related cracking in these types of pavement are discussed.
