MOTORWAY ACCIDENTS: ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN CHARACTERISTICS-RELATED VARIABLES

Turner and Thomas investigated relationships between traffic flow on motorways and accident totals, rates and severity. The investigations were based on motorway accident statistics relating to years 1974-82 using data appertaining to those links of the motorway network in Great Britain containing the core census sites. This paper extends the work by examining the effect on the fit of the relationships, of the introduction of hilliness and bendiness in addition to flow, and by investigating the associations between various factors by which the accidents may be classified.
