STRUCTURAL DESIGN GUIDE FOR RESIDENTIAL STREET PAVEMENTS: PRELIMINARY DRAFT

ARRB project 392 research findings will be formally implemented through the final publication of this design guide. This current report is a near to final draft of the design guide. Its objective is to provide Australian local government authorities with a scientifically based and consistent approach to street pavement design. It covers the six most important phases in street pavement design: (1) subgrade assessment, (2) traffic assessment, (3) thickness design, (4) pavement materials, (5) pavement surfacing and (6) construction standards. In this report, detailed consideration is given to flexible pavements consisting of unbound component layers, while some passing reference is made to flexible pavements with bound component layers and to pavements constructed with concrete blocks or paving bricks. Local government authorities and other interested organisations are asked to review the report and supply their written comment. ARRB endeavours in this way to track down the vast amount of knowledge and experience of local government engineers and others. This is considered essential input to the design guide. (Author/TRRL)
