BANDING TOGETHER FOR DRIVERS
Combining land and forming a joint venture, the city of Dallas which was building a concert hall and a private developer who was building a 50-story tower, filled their respective parking needs by building a concrete underground garage with 1,638 parking spaces. The garage goes 70 feet below grade, and is almost square (253x283 ft). The article describes how the garage achieved an efficient structural frame which squeezes in seven levels of parking, and incorporates the foundation and lower-level framing for one of the planned towers. Outstanding construction features include a slab-band system to reduce earthmoving and construction costs. Its relatively shallow beam depths permit lower floor-to-floor heights than other systems, yet meet required height clearances. The slab-band system also provides additional benefits in that beams can be held to dimensions that reduce the need for costly and time-consuming custom forming. To mimimize cracking, basement walls were poured in a checkerboard pattern.
