RESEARCH NEWS. PRODUCTION RATES AND PROFILES FOR VARIOUS SIZED ABRASIVES IN WET BLAST OPERATIONS
Research data shows that when finer abrasive particles are used in a wet abrasive blasting device, it cleans faster and produces less profile than when coarser abrasive is used. The equipment, the settings on the equipment, the substrate condition prior to blasting, and a description of the types of abrasives used are tabulated. Data from the test suggest that the production rate is a function of the smallest particle size in the particle-size distribution. Increase in productivity was observed with each incremental increase of fine particles. Although it has been claimed that staurolite cleans faster than silica sand because it is harder, sharper, and denser, it may be that the number of fine particles present affect productivity as much as some other noted items.
