BICYCLE SAFETY STUDY

The recent increase in bicycle use has been paralled by an increase in bicycle-involved accidents. This fact has prompted an extensive study of bicycle safety, preparatory to publication of a manual for bikeway planning and design. Considered here are results of a retail bicycle sales questionnaire, and cordon counts of bicycle volume. Surveys were conducted of accidents in critical areas and attempts were made to develop methods for identifying such areas. Data was collected on bicycle rider opinions and behaviors, and on recorded bicycle-motor vehicle accidents. The planning and design process for a demonstration bikeway is depicted, and an evaluation of the safety and effectiveness of on-street bikeways is given. /HRIS/
