REVIEW OF TIDAL FLOW SYSTEMS

Tidal flow operation is a traffic management process whereby the carriageway width is shared between the two directions of travel in near proportion to the flow in each direction. This paper presents information on the tidal flow systems in operation in England and the range of control equipment available. The factors which need to be considered when designing and implementing a tidal flow system are listed and summarized. The tidal flow systems operating in the U.K. are as follows: Heeley, Sheffield; A638 Bawtry Road, Doncaster; A4020 Denham, Buckinghamshire; North Road, Cardiff; Tamar Bridge, Plymouth; A12 Roundabout, Chelmsford; Upper Brook Street, Manchester; London Road, Manchester; Mersey Tunnels; A38(M) Aston Expressway, Birmingham; A102 (M) Blackwall Tunnel, London; Albert Bridge, London; Chelsea Bridge, London; Canwick Road, Lincoln; and A12 Trunk Road, Lowestoft. The majority of these schemes have been retained as they have achieved their objective of providing a cost-efective means of increasing the capacity of a road.
