ESTABLISHING A USER'S LABORATORY FOR EVALUATING PROTECTIVE COATINGS
This article identifies the major reasons for maintaining a coatings user laboratory, describes how to establish a laboratory, and reviews the testing functions that can be carried out. The best guidance for determining laboratory equipment and personnel requirements may be obtained from other users, paint suppliers, and consultants. The extensivenss of a laboratory will be determined by the number of functions to be undertaken in-house and those that will be acquired from vendors. Performance testing, longer term testing, quality assurance, and failure analyses are discussed. Safety and regulatory requirements and specifications are discussed, and questions which should be considered in determining the need for a user coating evaluation laboratory are listed.
