FLOATING BRIDGES AND SUBMERGED FLOATING TUBES - PROJECTS IN NORWAY

This paper deals with some of the main aspects related to crossing straits with floating bridges, submerged floating tubes, and ordinary bridges on submerged pontoons. The paper describes the floating bridges on the North American Continent, the early one in Tasmania and other possible solutions for this type of bridge. For submerged floating tubes different systems for anchoring of the tube to the bottom or the rock side are mentioned. A third type of floating bridge system consists of a high-level bridge on submerged pontoons. Descriptions are given of four Norwegian projects currently being planned: two floating bridges with continuous pontoons; and two submerged floating tubes, one with anchoring to two twin pontoons, the other with successive anchoring. Observations are made regarding cost factors, technological thresholds, and problem areas.
