COMPUTER MODEL FOR TRANSPORT COSTS
The Swedish Road and Traffic Institute has developed a computer model which can, given roughness and wear of the pavement, its width, horozontal and vertical alignment, the speed limits in force and the road conditions, calculate the following values for different types of vehicles: fuel consumption and fuel costs; tire wear and tire costs; costs of repairs, service and maintenance of the vehicle. The model can also compute an indirect measure of road deterioration arising through the roughness of the road. In order to provide data for the cost/road surfaces relation in the model, experimental and theoretical studies have been made of the way in which tire wear is influenced by the coarseness of the road surface. It has been found that tire wear increases with increasing rough coarseness of the surface, although, it is observed, the results are not conclusive.
