AN ANALYTICAL APPROACH TO SKETCH PLANNING IN SUBURBAN RAILWAYS
This paper presents a sketch planning model to assist operational planners in suburban railways. Its two component sub-models allow quick but approximate estimations to be made of various parameters. The fleet performance model estimates such parameters as fleet distance, fleet time and fleet size while line capacity is estimated in the second model. An analytical approach is adopted to provide insight into some of the fundamental relationships in rail operations. This makes the models useful not only for quick estimates but also as an aid to understanding the interactions within the system.
