NEW ROLES IN TRANSIT DEVELOPMENT

To help relieve urban congestion, private developers construct transit in conjunction with office and retail projects. As an example of transit being built privately, this article describes the proposed downtown people mover project in Pittsburgh. The 23000-ft. people mover, as proposed by a group of businessmen, will be built in conjunction with three, 35-story office buildings in the parking lot of Three Rivers Stadium, home of the Steelers and the Pirates. The $200 million project will span the Allegheny River and computer-operated cars will carry as many as 100 passengers free of charges.
