COMMUNITY TRANSPORT SERVICES IN THE UNITED KINGDOM: HISTORY, ORGANIZATION AND RECENT DEVELOPMENTS
In the last two decades major changes have occurred in the organization and provision of passenger transport services in the United Kingdom. One emerging trend, until recently poorly documented, has been the growth of special community transport services provided to meet local transport needs not served by conventional transport. This review examines community transport services and describes their role within the hierarchy of public transport systems, focussing in particular on rural voluntary car services, urban community minibus projects and dial-a-ride schemes. It is concluded that community transport has an important role to play in the future of public transport and this should be recognized by the transport industry in the U.K.
