TRANSPORTATION PROFESSIONALS: RECRUITMENT AND RETENTION. RESULTS FROM A SURVEY OF AASHTO MEMBER DEPARTMENTS
This report is based on the results from a survey sent to all the member departments of AASHTO in July, 1988. Some member departments had not returned their answers by the time of this compilation (November 1988), but enough were returned to more than adequately indicate trends. The survey sought information on problem recruitment areas, both now and in the future, for engineers and other transportation professionals, and salary information for entry level positions, after two years of employment, and for starting with a masters degree. The survey also sought information on several types of activities that at least some departments are known to utilize in their recruitment efforts, as well as information about educational materials utilized for recruitment activities. The survey sought information on the retention situation in the member departments, including information about specific programs designed to increase employee retention. The member departments were encouraged to recommend activities they believed would be of help in the areas addressed by the survey, and were requested to provide appropriate materials from their agencies describing recruitment and retention activities.
