DEVELOPMENT OF A COMPUTER PROGRAM TO DESIGN SEAT BELT LAYOUTS GIVING THE GREATEST COMFORT, SAFETY AND CONVENIENCE. PART 1: PROGRAM ENHANCEMENTS AND OPTIMISATION OF STATIC COMFORT
A previous project, funded jointly by MEERB of the DOI, UK industry and MIRA, led to the development of a computer program named beltfit version 1 for predicting how well a proposed seat belt installation will suit three standard wearers. Use of this program by industry produced suggestions for extending its scope. The present project created a much more comprehensive program named beltfit version 3, which includes a wider range of wearers, hardware features and regulations. This program was further expanded into a program named optimum beltfit, which optimises the position of seat belt anchorages to give the most comfortable fit for a range of wearers. An improved structure and more rigorous programming standards have made these programs easy to mount and modify on manufacturers' own computer installations. The results of industry's experience of using beltfit have been incorporated, making the new programs simpler to understand and use. (TRRL)
