ROCKY MOUNTAIN DOUBLES ON TWO LANE HIGHWAYS : PILOT PROJECT. 1986 ANNUAL CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS VOLUME 2

The overlength vehicle operating program in Saskatchewan permits the use of rocky mountain doubles (a tractor with one 48 foot trailer and one 28 foot trailer) on the province's four lane divided highway system. This project examined the potential effects on safety and vehicle productivity of allowing rocky mountain doubles to operate on two lane highways during restricted hours (11 pm to 6:30 am). Results showed that traffic conflicts involving rocky mountain doubles (when overtaking vehicles were unable to pass because of oncoming traffic) were much fewer than conflicts involving semi-trailers and legal length doubles operating during the day. Further, increased vehicle productivity resulted in lower transportation costs. It was decided to extend the overlength vehicle permits to allow operation during restricted hours on approved two-lane highways. (TRRL)
