ROAD TRAFFIC AND SAFETY IN SYRIA. UNITED NATIONS: WORKSHOP ON TRAFFIC SAFETY, SEP 28 - OCT 4 1987, LINKOEPING, SWEDEN. PART 1-2

Syria is constructing a large road network to satisfy economic and social development needs. Paved road network amounted to 21290 km in 1985 and the vehicle fleet is growing substantially. Traffic density on rural roads is low, most of these roads have a traffic density less than 2000 vehicles per day. Congestion represents a main problem but only in big cities. Traffic growth on the roads caused traffic problems which need to be solved. The most important problem is the increasing road accident rate. Some of the most important factors which affect traffic and safety, are the following: weak enforcement of traffic rules; no limits of vehicle weight and dimensions; axle load control is not enforced; insufficient traffic control devices; low technical specifications of many roads; speed limits are not applied. Big efforts were made to improve traffic conditions and safety, procedures and policies were adapted: preparing new legislation for axle load control and for limiting vehicle weight and dimensions, enlarging the capacity of road signs workshop; beginning a project to construct 15 centres equipped with fixed weighbridges for axle load control.
