TENDENCIES IN INTERURBAN ROAD TRAFFIC VOLUMES: EVOLUTION AND PERSPECTIVES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATIONAL ROAD AND MOTORWAY NETWORK IN ROMANIA. UNITED NATIONS: WORKSHOP ON TRAFFIC SAFETY, SEP 28 - OCT 4 1987, LINKOEPING, SWEDEN. PART 1-2

Road transportation constitutes one of the basic components of the transport system in romania and has increased annually so that in 1980 about 82.5% of goods transport and 74% of interurban passenger transportation is carried out by road. The traffic volume also increased considerably. As a result of continuous efforts in improvement and rehabilitation of the road network serviceability, presently 46.4% of the public roads and respectively 96.5% of the national roads are modernized or have various types of pavement. In spite of these achievements it should be mentioned that there still exist differences between the continuously growing road traffic demands and the measures taken to improve the technical condition and to develop the road network. These differences have increased over the last period generating a series of difficulties in ensuring the serviceability and the good conditions for road transport at the level required by the development of the national economy.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 808557.
