ROAD TRAFFIC AND SAFETY: INDIA - COUNTRY PAPER. UNITED NATIONS: WORKSHOP ON TRAFFIC SAFETY, SEPT 28 - OCT 4 1987, LINKOEPING, SWEDEN. PART 1-2
The number of motor vehicles in India has grown from 300000 in 1950 to over 10 million in 1986. This increase has been accompanied by road accidents which have assumed serious proportions with high rate of fatalities and grievous injuries. The fatalities have shot up from 14460 in 1970 to 40590 in 1986. A multi-pronged approach is necessary to effectively deal with the problem of road accidents. It has essentially to be a package programme involving agencies at different levels. Some of the major action points would include: (a) establishment of a sound data base so as to properly diagnose the problem and identifying specific areas of action; (b) publicity and education measures with a view to creating public awareness with regard to road safety; (C) amendment/development of new legislation, laws, rules for road safety improvement; (d) devising incentive schemes aimed at promoting safe driving; (e) strict enforcement of traffic management measures.(a) for the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 808557.
