SURVEYS OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLES WEIGHTS 1975 TO 1982

In the past four decades, commercial vehicles have increased in weight and number. Because these increases may effect highway structures, four Ontario surveys of commercial vehicles were done between 1975 and 1982 which included records of weights, and inter-axle spacings or their equivalent base lengths. For comparison, two samples from weigh-in-motion surveys in the United States are included. There is no significant evidence to suggest that the heaviest trucks in Ontario (top one percent) increased in weight from 1975 to 1982. The weigh-in-motion samples taken in the United States were similar to those taken in Ontario except that a much larger fraction of the Ontario samples had weights exceeding 500 kn. From the 1982 survey, there is an indication that trucks with equivalent base lengths between 8 and 18 m are occasionally considerably overloaded in urban areas. (Author/TRRL)
