PEDESTRIAN CROSSWALK SYSTEMS FOR THE ELDERLY AND THE HANDICAPPED

This report provides an overview of: the needs of the elderly and the handicapped when travelling as pedestrians; the urban crosswalk systems and traffic signal technology that have been developed to improve the safety of elderly and handicapped pedestrians; and guidelines for further improvements in urban design. The report includes a functional specification for improved safety in pedestrian crosswalk systems and recommendations for further development. The main conclusion of the report is that most of the needs of elderly and handicapped pedestrians can be met by improving urban crosswalk systems for the benefit of all pedestrians. (TRRL)
