DEVELOPMENT OF REMOTE SENSING-BASED PROCEDURE TO ESTIMATE BOULDER CONCENTRATION
Existing methods for estimating the percentage of boulders in bouldery soil for contract bidding purposes are inadequate. The object of this study was to investigate the capabilities of remote sensing techniques, both photographic and non-photographic, and to devise a method to increase the accuracy of boulder estimates. A procedure was developed based on testing of three sites in the precambrian shield of northern Ontario using black and white airphotos. By identifying landforms, reconstructing their geological history and determining the extent of glacial and post-glacial modification subsequent to their formation, concentration estimates can be as close as plus or minus 20%. Application is limited in areas where landforms are poorly developed or where the effects of glacial and post-glacial processes are indistinct. (Author/TRRL)
