ACCELERATED CORROSION IN WEATHERING STEEL BRIDGES

Weathering steel has been used almost exclusively for the structural steel components in the highway bridges in Ontario since 1968. This paper describes an investigation in 1981 of the performance of weathering steel bridges in the province. Particular attention was paid to bridges situated where de-icing salts are used extensively in winter maintenance operations. Numerous examples of accelerated steel corrosion in weathering steel bridges were observed. The paper concludes with some recommendations on how to minimize accelerated corrosion in weathering steel bridges. (Author/TRRL)
