DAYTIME RUNNING LIGHTS: A POTENT TRAFFIC SAFETY MEASURE
Daytime Running Lights (DRL) are used on the assumption that there is a causal relationship between an increase in motor vehicle visibility and a decrease in risk of traffic accident. The report discusses a short literature survey of the growing use of DRL beginning in the 1960s. It describes the introduction of compulsory use of DRL in the Scandinavian countries and evaluates the effects of DRL on daytime multiple accidents in these countries. It also reviews recent trends and changing attitudes toward DRL in North America and on the European continent.
