DYNAMIC MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF TWO AAR M128 AND ONE ASTM A212-B STEEL TANK CAR HEAD PLATES

Instrumented precracked Charpy impact testing and dynamic tear testing were carried out on steel plate samples taken from three railroad tank cars. Two of the samples were given as AAR M128, a high strength carbon manganese steel, while the third was reported to be ASTM A212-65, a high stength carbon silicon steel. Values were found for the ranges of transition temperatures and for the energies absorbed, including crack initiation energy, crack propagation energy, and total energy.
