WHAT ABOUT PEDESTRIANS AND CYCLISTS ON RURAL ROADS

The paper deals with the extent and characteristics of rural pedestrian and pedal cycle accidents in South Africa. The causes of fatal and major injury accidents for 1984 are analyzed. Accident data have been plotted onto topo-cadastral maps in order to locate hazardous road sections and sites. It is concluded that proper accident record and analysis systems for rural roads are required and that geometric design standards and guidelines for pedestrian and cycle facilities for rural roads are lacking.
