REVIEW OF THE USE OF THE MDS (MAINTENANCE AND DESIGN SYSTEM) FOR MANAGING UNPAVED ROAD NETWORKS
The Maintenance and Design System (MDS) provides management information for planning the maintenance and upgrading of unpaved road networks. The method for determining the budget requirements in respect of blading, regravelling and upgrading, as well as the grader complement, is demonstrated by means of an application in Gazankulu. It is furthermore shown that grader productivity had a small effect on the grader complement, but an important effect on the budget. The management information for unpaved roads is essential for planning and budgeting, and the implementation of the MDS by road authorities is recommended.
