ALTERNATIVES TO THE ILLUMINATED YELLOW BOLLARD
ALTERNATIEVEN VOOR DE VERKEERSZUIL
Seven alternatives to the illuminated yellow bollard, model 62, commonly placed on traffic islands in built-up areas, have been investigated with respect to several information-processing aspects relevant to drivers, in comparison with the bollard presently used in the Netherlands. Each alternative was evaluated on the following aspects: Its conspicuity in darkness; its capacity to compel the driver to adjust his course so as to avoid coming into contact with the traffic island; the degree to which it permits a correct assessment of the position of the traffic island within the environment; the degree to which it obstructs the view on pedestrians making use of the island to cross the street; and its resistance to glare cause by teh headlamps of vehicles coming from the opposite direction. The results of the field study proved to be of insufficient reliability, the degree of concordance among the observers being no more than moderate. The results of the laboratory study were distinctly in favor of the alternatives comprising a yellow pole with an arrow sign.
