FIGURES OF MERIT FOR MOTOR VEHICLE CONSPICUITY AND VISIBILITY SUBSYSTEMS

Figure of Merit models were developed for passenger car visibility and conspicuity subsystems. Models are based on evaluation of a visibility or conspicuity metric over a set of two-vehicle scenarios. Three computer programs are designed to run on IBM PC compatible computers. Visibility FOM's were calculated using the models and the measurements of window and mirror fields of view of 14 passenger cars. CARDFILE accident rates for each vehicle were related ot overall FOM by vehicle make/model and body type. Conspicuity FOM's were not as thoroughly developed, however, a framework for calculating necessary photometric parameters is provided for future development.
