INVESTIGATION OF DETERMINANTS OF CHOICE OF SPEED. REPORT 1. EVALUATION OF SPEED PROFILES ON COUNTRY ROADS. FINAL REPORT.

UNTERSUCHUNGEN ZU DETERMINANTEN DER GESCHWINDIGKEITSWAHL. BERICHT 1. AUSWERTUNG VON GESCHWINDIGKEITSPROFILEN AUF AUSSERORTSSTRASSEN. ABSCHLUSSBERICHT.

The aim of investigations explained in detail, was to analyze and quantify the driving behavior of drivers when approaching bends. Where and when the driver reacts and how and to what extent was of special interest. The speed curves of subsequent driving and the place of the first reaction (stopping acceleration), the start of braking, the amount of deceleration and the distribution of the coefficients of friction were evaluated for this purpose. The most important results of the investigation were: the greater the acceleration capacity of vehicles with larger engines affects the whole way of driving; the greatest deceleration occurs not before but after the area of the curve for some narrow and not easily visible bends; drivers assume considerably higher coefficients of friction, above all in wet conditions, than is assumed in the guidelines; the accepted maxima of lateral coeicients of friction hardly differ from one bend to another for narrow radii; the visual conditions exert a great effect on the reaction behaviour of the drvier. From this knowledge, information on the configuration of approaches to bends should be developed.
