The evolution of urban transportation planning over the last fifty years is described in this updated version of "Evolution of Urban Transportation Planning", published in 1979 as Chapter 15 in Public Transportation: Planning, Operations and Management. It focuses on key events in the evolution of urban transportation planning such as developments in technical procedures, philosophy, processes and institutions, as well as changes in legislation, policy, regulations and technology. It contains many additions and some revisions to the earlier edition.
