RECENT RESULTS OF TESTS IN THE NSMB DEPRESSURIZED TOWING TANK
In this paper a description is given of the Netherlands Ship Model Basin Variable-Pressure Towing Tank, situated in Ede in the Netherlands. This model test facility - often referred to as the NSMB Depressurized Towing Tank or Vacuumtank has now been in operation for some 2 years. Here propellers can be tested in real cavitating conditions behind a large, towed ship model. The required low pressure is obtained by evacuating the air in the entire building. A discussion is presented of the way in which experiments are conducted together with some typical results obtained up to date. The experiments that are regularly carried out are resistance and propulsion tests, flow observation tests, cavitation observation tests, wake field measurements, dynamic hull-pressure and dynamic shaft force measurements, steady and dynamic blade spindle torque measurements and radiated noise measurements. Finally, a description is given of major numerical programs which are employed during experimental programs to support the interpretation of test results and to facilitate a proper choice of the parameters to be experimentally studied. The most important of these numerical programs are a program for the prediction of resistance and propulsion properties of different kinds of ships, a program for the calculation of the type and extent of cavitation on propellers, a program for the calculation of dynamic hull pressure induced by cavitating propellers, a program based on unsteady lifting surface theory to calculate dynamic propeller forces and a program to assess the Reynolds scale effect on ship wakes at the location of the propeller. Some typical results obtained with each of these numerical procedures are shown and discussed.
