BLUNT BOW FORMS AND WAVE BREAKING
For an analytical study of the effect of blunt bow forms on wave resistance, an asymptotic formula to calculate wave resistance of slowly moving full forms is derived. From calculations of wave resistance of simple full forms, i.e. semi-submerged ellipsoids and vertical cylinders of arbitrary cross section. It is shown that in the low speed limit the wave resistance coefficient is proportional to F sub n to the 6th power, where F sub n is Froude number, and the wave resistance due to bow form is separable from that due to the stern form when the length-breadth ratio exceeds a certain value, say, 6. Further it is indicated that protruded bows are effective in reducing steepness of bow waves and then contribute to the reduction of wave breaking resistance which is attributed to the steepening of bow waves in the shallow draft condition. Those theoretical predictions are verified by experimental data of full form models.
