NATIONAL ACCIDENT SAMPLING SYSTEM 1986. A REPORT ON TRAFFIC CRASHES AND INJURIES IN THE UNITED STATES
This is the eighth annual report of the National Accident Sampling System (NASS), presenting national characteristics of traffic crashes in the United States. The report includes summary statistics on approximately 6,400,000 police-reported crashes that occurred in 1986. The national estimates, which are produced from statistically-weighted sampled cases, are based on investigation of over 13,000 traffic crashes in 1986. Section I describes NASS operations. Further details are presented in Appendices A through F, which discuss the NASS sample design, zone centers and crash investigation sites, data elements, the size of the database and the reliability and accuracy of survey techniques. Section II concentrates on the priority safety areas of alcohol and safety belt use. A brief discussion of each area is presented with tables and figures. Section III serves as a reference on crash data for 1986. Data are presented in tabular form, without text, on the broad range of topics covered by NASS, in sections: crashes, drivers, passenger cars and their occupants, light trucks and vans and their occupants, medium and heavy trucks and their occupants, motorcycles and their riders, non-occupants, and injuries and their consequences.
