SEASON TICKET FOR PUBLIC TRANSPORT FOR PROTECTION OF THE ENVIRONMENT

MILIEU-ABONNEMENT VOOR HET OPENBAAR VERVOER

The environmental effects of the introduction of a cheap public transport season ticket are determined with the help of a literature study. This cheaper season ticket is meant to influence the choice of transport mode by travellers in order to diminish pollution. The experiment was carried out in four towns in Switzerland and Germany. The season ticket introduction was accompanied by much publicity. The number of public transport travellers increased by 6%. The most probable reason for people to take the season ticket was the lower price. No unambiguous conclusions can be drawn about the influence on the environment and long term effects can not yet be shown. The results do not apply completely to the Dutch situation. (TRRL)
