APPLIED TRANSPORT ECONOMICS

This book examines the main principles of transport economics from the practical viewpoint. Chapter one covers the dynamics of the transport market and introduces the concept of the elasticity of demand. Chapters two and three look at the operations of the transport firm in terms of its costing and pricing policies. Chapters four to seven look at the different roles which a government does or could play in public transport through road subsidy, regulation or deregulation and road investment. An example of a possible integrated transport policy is given in chapter seven. The final four chapters are a series of case studies which put transport into its wider role of contributing to economic growth. The four scenarios used to illustrate this contribution are: 19th century Britain; depressed areas in the UK; tourism; and third world countries. (TRRL)
