HAZARDOUS MATERIALS TRANSPORTATION. HEARINGS BEFORE THE SUBCOMMITTEE ON SURFACE TRANSPORTATION OF THE COMMITTEE ON COMMERCE, SCIENCE, AND TRANSPORTATION, UNITED STATES SENATE.

The hearings are presented on the reauthorization of the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act. Concerns have been expressed that this act enacted in 1975, may no longer be adequate to ensure safety and meet the needs associated with the transportation of these materials. The concerns of state and local officials which center on personnel training, and the need for assistance from the federal government for both funding and guidelines in dealing with these materials are noted. The hearings will also focus on the concerns of shippers and carriers of hazardous materials that governments are imposing registration fees and restricting access for those who transport hazardous materials. Industry argues that this poses a burden on interstate commerce and an unnecessary expense for businesses.
