DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS FOR LOW VOLUME ROADS

The subject of low-volume roads is currently very topical. It is therefore considered that there is a need to review some of the design considerations for low-volume roads with reference to local South African conditions and those of developing neighbouring countries. The unique design factors associated with low-volume roads are usually neglected and often tend to be overshadowed by the more intricate design theories associated with the heavily trafficked roads. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the philosophy behind the various design considerations and highlight the options that are available when considering the geometric, pavement and drainage designs as well as the maintenance of low-volume roads in southern Africa.
