ROAD SIGNS FOR USE AT ROAD WORKS

One of the major recommendations of the seminar on safety in road construction held in Pretoria in September 1978 was that road signs for use at roadworks should be improved. These signs should have a distinctive colour that should appear the same during the day and at night. The NITRR was requested to investigate a number of signs proposed at the seminar. Seven night-time experiments were conducted and a number of viewings of different signs and signing systems were held during the day, twilight and at night. It was found that signs having a fluorescent reflective red border and a yellow reflective background with a matt black symbol were more visible than all the other signs tested. These signs have been recommended for use at roadworks, and this recommendation is at present under consideration by the Committee of State Road Authorities.
