STRUCTURAL ASSESSMENT. THE USE OF FULL AND LARGE SCALE TESTING. THE BENEFITS OF LARGE SCALE STRUCTURAL TESTING
Large scale testing programmes are often undertaken to reduce project risks to an acceptable level. The benefits of such programmes can be difficult to assess and a new method of assessment, based on the theory of fuzzy sets, has been developed. It equates the change in risks due to testing with the change in insurance premium which should result. A cost benefit is therefore obtained, even if no change in design or construction costs is expected. An example of the method is presented with reference to a proposed suspension bridge structure. It is anticipated that the simplicity and flexibility of the method will be attractive to engineering decision makers. (Author/TRRL)
