METHODS OF ANALYSIS FOR CORRECTING THE STANDARD PENETRATION RESISTANCE OF NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED HOLOCENE CLAYS. SYMPOSIUM ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN LABORATORY AND FIELD TESTS AND ANALYSIS OF GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS. ASIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, BANGKOK, THAILAND, 6-9 DECEMBER 1983
The standard penetration test (spt) is widely used throughout the world because of its double function: that of taking a representative sample and that of measuring the penetration resistance at the same time. Because many factors affect the penetration resistance, evaluation of the latter is not easy for some types of soil. While several methods of correcting the n-value have been proposed for sands, no method of n-value correction has been developed for cohesive soils. This paper presents a method of analysis for evaluating and correcting the penetration resistance measured with the spt in a normally consolidated Holocene clay. Basic formulae were applied to available data on Holocene marine clays in Tokyo bay. As a result, a very high correlation was established between unconfined compressive strength and corrected n-value. The theory presented in this paper seems applicable to any saturated clay as far as its undrained shear strength is proportional to the effective overburden pressure.
