A SIMPLE LABORATORY PERMEABILITY TEST. SYMPOSIUM ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN LABORATORY AND FIELD TESTS AND ANALYSIS OF GEOTECHNICAL PROBLEMS. ASIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, BANGKOK, THAILAND, 6-9 DECEMBER 1983

An undisturbed soil sample encased in a thin-wall tube may be tested directly for horizontal permeability. Through a row of small holes drilled on each side of the tube, water with a constant head is supplied from one end to the other across the diameter of the soil sample until a steady state of flow is established through the soil still encased in the tube. From the rate of flow discharge measured, the coefficient of permeability may readily be computed over each divided section or over the entire length of the soil sample, thus providing an important information on horizontal mass permeabilty of a thick compressible stratum. For the covering abstract of the symposium see IRRD 809912. (Author/TRRL)
