ROAD SAFETY IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES: THE ROLE OF RESEARCH. PROCEEDINGS OF THE INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP "RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN ROAD SAFETY RESEARCH", KONINKLIJK CONSERVATORIUM, THE HAGUE, 19 NOVEMBER 1986

Road accidents are a continuous burden for all developing and developed countries. There are reasons, however, to pay special attention to developing countries as the situation often seems to be worse than that in developed countries, and as the consequences of road accidents, even individual accidents, can be more far-reaching. In this note the situation in developing countries is discussed, as is the role of developed countries in improving the situation, and in particular the role of scientific research. Such research needs to fulfill the following requirements: (1) the research must be truly international; (2) research should be coordinated or even initiated by international organizations; (3) several countries, preferably a small number, should take the lead in organizing such research; (4) research activities should start by establishing an international programme that is applicable for the majority if not all developing countries, taking into account the differences in economic and cultural situation; and (5) the financing of the research should be organized in a better way.
