PREDICTION OF ELASTO-PLASTIC CONSOLIDATION BEHAVIOUR. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985
A linear model for describing elasto-plastic consolidation behaviour is presented, based on the Biot's theory of linear elastic consolidation. The deformation of a soft clay foundation due to embankment loading is analyzed by applying the model to in-situ measurements, from which stiffness factors of the foundation are shown to be "identified", or back calculated. Since these stiffness factors contain the moduli of elasticity in terms of effective stresses, the prediction of both impending failure and long term settlement becomes possible through examining the deterioration and recovery of these factors. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (TRRL)
