APPLICATION OF STRESS PATH METHOD TO A LARGE EXCAVATION. PROCEEDINGS OF THE ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SOIL MECHANICS AND FOUNDATION ENGINEERING, SAN FRANCISCO, 12-16 AUGUST 1985
For deep excavation in soft ground, deformation in the ground surrounding the site, taking into consideration the interaction between the ground and the earth retaining wall, must be considered as well as the stress and deformation of the wall. It is extremely difficult, however, to predict the behaviour of the ground and therefore it is normal practice to design for forces against the earth retaining wall only. It is essential to derive a model for finite element analysis of the braced excavation including evaluation of the surrounding ground condition. In this paper, it is shown that the determination of soil parameters based on the stress path method proposed by Lambe (1967) is reasonable and simple. A case study applying this procedure to a large deep excavation in soft ground is discussed. For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 287689. (TRRL)
