SYSTEM FOR ON-LINE COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN OF SHIPS
The paper describes the first phase of research leading to an integrated system for the design of ships. A feature of the system is the representation of a ship design held on the disk store of a powerful computer in such a way that it can be modified as the design develops. The system is operated by typing commands, in a language familiar to designers, on a teletype connected on-line to the computer. The computer programs use the stored representation automatically to prepare input concerning the design and the calculations have priority over the normal stream of jobs through the computer. The results may be output via a telephone line by the teletype or by an automatic drawing machine. Future possibilities are indicated briefly.
